Can I quit my job?

QUESTION:

“Dear Pete: I HATE my job!  Can I quit my job to focus on looking for my next job?”

ANSWER:

I’d really encourage you to stick it out if you can.  If there is something unethical or illegal going on around you at work, or if you actually feel unsafe, that’s a different issue.

However, if you simply dislike the work and find it boring, your best bet is to stay while you look for your next job.  Here are a few reasons why.

First of all, while employers will not admit it publicly, there is definitely a stigma against unemployed job-seekers.  The implication is “If this person is so great, how come no one else has hired him/her?”  By quitting your job and joining the unemployed, you reduce your perceived value to other employers.  Might not fair, and there can be exceptions, but it’s usually the reality.

Secondly, if you quit your job and become an unemployed, full-time job-seeker, you’ll have a lot more pressure on yourself.  This can make you more desperate and lead to a hasty decision in regard to how you look for your next job.

In summary, try to make the best out of your current situation while looking for your next job.

Until next time, remember that you just need 1 break to get your dream job, and it’s closer than you think!
